The experience

«Un día entre agua, color y montaña. Sube, contempla y respira uno de los paisajes más memorables de Antioquia.»

“A day of water, color, and mountains. Climb, take it in, and breathe one of Antioquia’s most memorable landscapes.”

Water where valleys used to be

East of Medellín, the land opens into a maze of water, islands, and green peninsulas. This is the Peñol-Guatapé reservoir, created by a major hydroelectric project that flooded valleys and part of the old town of El Peñol. What looks like a natural lake today is, in fact, a human work that reshaped life across the region.

According to the hotel’s guide, it lies roughly two hours from Medellín. So it is best thought of as a whole day, with nothing else stacked on top.

The climb

Rising from the landscape is the Piedra del Peñol, a granite rock you can see from miles around. A narrow white staircase zigzags up a crack in its face. The hotel’s guide describes it as a rock almost 200 meters tall, with 740 steps, and puts the climb at about 20 minutes.

Climb at your own pace. There are resting spots along the way and no one is chasing you. At the top, the reservoir stretches in every direction, all islands and arms of water. It is a wide view, the kind that asks you to stay quiet for a while.

The town of zócalos

Guatapé, the neighboring town, is known for its zócalos: colorful reliefs along the lower part of the facades. They show animals, trades, scenes of daily life, sometimes something that identifies the family inside. Walking its cobbled streets is like reading the town house by house.

The hotel’s guide suggests a lunch of mojarra in town, and it is a good idea. After the effort, an outdoor table with still water nearby is welcome.

If the weather is kind, the reservoir invites you to linger. Watch the water from the shore, see the boats go by, let your body recover from the climb. Not everything on this day has to be movement. Part of the landscape is best enjoyed simply sitting down, watching the clouds shift over the islands.

A long day, well spent

It is a day of road, steps, and sun, so set out rested and come back with no plans for the evening. A warm shower, something light to eat, and an early night at Bruma Verde round it off.
