Down to warmer country

Hacienda Nápoles is in Puerto Triunfo, in Antioquia’s Magdalena Medio region, far from the Aburrá valley. The road drops out of the mountains toward warmer lowlands, and the landscape changes: flatter land, more river, more heat. It is a long road trip, and it is worth knowing that from the start.

The hotel’s website describes it as a full-day trip from Medellín. That is the right way to take it: one plan for the whole day.

A place with a past

The estate once belonged to Pablo Escobar. It later passed to the state and today operates as a theme park. It is a history that still hurts in Colombia, and it deserves to be told plainly. What you visit now is a park of animals, nature, and water attractions, not a tribute.

Animals and water

The hippos are the park’s best-known image. They descend from animals brought to the estate decades ago, and today they are part of the region’s landscape. The park also has other exotic species, green areas, and water attractions to cool off from the heat.

Families with children and groups of friends tend to enjoy it most. There is room to walk, watch animals, and get in the water.

Not a quiet day

To be honest: Nápoles is not a calm day. There is the road there and back, heat, sun, and constant movement. If you are after a day of quiet, Guatapé or the Coffee Tour may be closer to what you want. If you want energy, open air, and something different, this is your day.

To enjoy it most, set out with energy and let go of the need for control. There may be lines at times, direct sun, and excited kids. Bring water, sun protection, and a sense of humor. And think of the drive as part of the day: the landscape shifts from cool mountains to hot lowlands, and it is worth watching from the window.

Before you decide, message us. The team will explain how the trip is organized and help you see whether this plan fits your stay.

When you get back, the house will be quiet. Rest is a destination too.
